Graz Memorandum provides strong impetus for applied research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 19th Research Forum of Universities of Applied Sciences (FFH 2026) took place at CAMPUS 02 on 15 and 16 April. Around 300 participantsfrom science, business and politics as well as representatives<\/em>The event was attended by students from 17 universities of applied sciences (FH\/HAW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 136 practical research projects from areas such as automation, data management, innovation, marketing, finance, social affairs and health were presented. The focus was on concrete solutions for current challenges and their direct benefits for the economy and society. The research forum thus impressively emphasised the UAS's capabilities in application-oriented research - from the initial idea to its implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FH\/HAW as key players in the innovation system<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UASs are a central component of the Austrian education, research and innovation system. They strengthen regions, promote social permeability and, through their close cooperation with companies - especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) - make a significant contribution to the rapid transfer of research into marketable innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A central item on the programme was the presentation of the \u201eGraz Memorandum\u201c, which was handed over to Federal Minister Holzleitner. The memorandum, which is based on a unanimous decision by the FHK Board, emphasises the role of UASs as indispensable players in the innovation system and formulates concrete measures to strengthen applied research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demand for sustainable research funding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FHK President Ulrike Prommer emphasised the need for structural improvements:
\u201eSufficient research funding is needed to move away from the current project logic and also secure the phases before, between and after externally funded projects. Especially in times of multiple crises, investment in applied research is crucial. Our universities are speedboats - manoeuvrable, flexible and responsive. But they need sufficient resources. A valorisation of funding rates is therefore essential.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clear political signals for further development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the forum, Federal Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner emphasised the importance of UASs for the higher education system and signalled her support for their further development. She showed understanding for the fact that accredited doctoral programmes represent an important development perspective for UASs and announced the establishment of a working group, as provided for in the government programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal Minister Holzleitner emphasised that all university sectors are equally important, even if there are different legal structures. The current budget negotiations would reflect this importance - particularly with regard to valorisation and a new research component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Prommer also spoke out in favour of reducing bureaucracy in the accreditation of degree programmes and expressly welcomed the Minister's support for the development of accredited doctoral degree programmes at UASs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josef Herk, President of the Styrian Economic Chamber, also emphasised the importance of the sector:
\u201eUASs are characterised by a strong creative drive and high practical orientation. However, without sufficient funding, we risk Austria losing ground in international competition.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 20th Research Forum of Universities of Applied Sciences will take place next year at UAS Technikum Wien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
