Representatives from science, business and politics discuss current developments and future prospects for applied research.

During the opening ceremony, FHK President Ulrike Prommer emphasised the increasing importance of the FH/HAW for Austria as a location for innovation and science - and at the same time pointed out the urgent need for political action.

„With their application-oriented research, our universities make a decisive contribution to solving key societal challenges - from security, digitalisation and healthcare to climate protection issues and overcoming global economic crises. These achievements must also be reflected in the structural framework conditions,“ says FHK President Ulrike Prommer.

The FHK sees a clear signal for a change of perspective in the current debate surrounding independent doctoral programmes. In a press statement, ÖAW President Heinz Fassmann also spoke out in favour of linking access to doctorates to quality criteria instead of fundamentally denying it to UASs.

„This development shows that the quality and performance of our universities are having an impact. We now need to take the next consistent steps - in particular by creating independent, accredited doctoral programmes at our universities,“ says Prommer.

With around 2,500 research projects and around 180 million euros in annual research investment, Austrian UASs currently make a significant contribution to the country's innovative strength. The sector is characterised by the close interlinking of research and practice: research results flow directly into economic applications and social solutions.

In the view of the FHK, the system now needs sustainable further development. This includes, in particular, reliable basic research funding, structural equality with other university sectors and the expansion of research-led qualification pathways.

„A forward-looking higher education policy is crucial to the competitiveness of our country. Our universities have the potential to be a central element of this development - this potential must now be fully utilised,“ emphasises FHK Secretary General Kurt Koleznik.

Over the coming days, the research forum will provide a platform for intensive dialogue on current research topics and the further development of the higher education sector.

The FHK would like to thank FH CAMPUS 02 as well as Kristina Edlinger-Ploder and Erich Brugger for the excellent organisation of the event.

FHK fordert strukturelle Gleichstellung und zukunftsfitte Hochschulpolitik Mit der feierlichen Eröffnung des 19.
